Canadian-born, Florida-based prose and poetry writer A. N. McKinnon is currently studying Creative Writing at Ringling College of Art and Design.
Her writing is a blend of horror, magical realism, and speculative fiction often drawing from passed-down family stories of Communist Hungary and her own experiences with grief and healing. Interested in anything to do with publishing and the editorial world, she leans toward traditional prose and formal poetry, with a thematic focus on the process of losing something dear to the heart, be it a person, a place, an object, a feeling, or even a name, a focus that stems from losing her father at 13, as well as her interest in historic Europe.
It’s from history, cryptic legends, and scientific and archeological phenomena that she takes inspiration, merging these with rich geography and references to the western literary canon. Her writing process often begins with a spark of something–a character, a setting, a period–and spirals into something more melancholic, more foreboding, and more corrosive from there.
Her current long-form project, The Vistula, is speculative fiction combined with magical realism, exploring a version of Eastern Europe in which the Iron Curtain never fell. From the Danube, to the Vistula, to the Amur River, the lives of three young men from Krakow have never been so Red.
